work recognition

According to research by Blackhawk Engagement Solutions, the Gallup Organisation has found that, employees receive recognition every seven days in productive and engaged workplaces. The result is an improvement in working relationships, employee engagement and staff retention.

Not only does positive reinforcement increase performance; the results grow stronger the longer that a reward program is in place. A 20% performance increase can be achieved within 1-7 days, a 30% increase can be achieved in up to 6 months, and a whopping 44% increase can be hit within the year. Statistics also say that 46% of senior managers view recognition programs as an investment rather than an expense.

As an employee, it is therefore clear that you should be working for a company that rewards you regularly if you wish to become motivated to produce a greater performance. Let’s take a look at five ways that your company could be making you feel appreciated to see how inspirational your office environment really is:

Verbal Support

According to Inc., successful leaders have a positive attitude and build strong and enduring relationships with their employees. Constant feedback and words of reward, support and thankfulness can be used to confirm the great job that you have been doing. When was the last time your results were celebrated or that you received a simple thank you?

Awards & Incentives

A good example of a common incentive is a “Service Anniversary Ridge” linked to loyalty and is used by 90% of organisations. This makes their employees feel appreciated for the service and work that they have given to their company. It’s important that you know that you are a crucial piece of the company and that you will be rewarded for loyalty, good work, performance or for competing at your job.

Your Opinion Is Important

Work recognition also relies on how your ideas are heard and taken into consideration. Even if you are not a talkative person, sometimes in meeting or brainstorming work it’s good to be asked about your opinion. It means your knowledge and intelligence is taken seriously and that your boss is aware that you have something to offer to the table. This can also be a positive signal that you would be considered for promotion.

The Credit For Your Work

According to Blackhawk, receiving company visibility is highly rewarding for some employees. “Increased Visibility” as they call it, is when your personal work is acknowledged and credited to you by your boss or your peers. Remember that a good leader never has a favourite, but instead encourages a healthy and equal work environment that recognises good work to the ones that have gone that extra mile.

You Are Challenged

Trust is also a good incentive and recognition of strong valuable work. Being given major responsibilities as well as challenging projects to improve your performance is a sign of your employer having trust in your capability of providing thought-out and reliable work. These responsibilities should be judged on their quality rather than their quantity, with being left in charge seen as the greatest quality measure of your perceived capability and experience.
